The Art of Demonstrating

Sectarianism… Pushing the limits by fascist acts! Now regardless of their political views, beliefs, social class or age, people of Istanbul are on the streets; demanding for their rights. The movement is being spread in other cities of Turkey as well as cities like Berlin, Amsterdam, London, NY…

But…why? Demonstrations to protest the demolition of Gezi Park in Taksim Square, where also has an historical significance, began silently until the attack of the police. Unfortunately, police attacks with gas bombs have became a daily ritual in Turkey − one may recall 1st of May. The Prime Minister, Tayyip Erdoğan, and his government have been trying to suppress freedom of speech; laws related with abortion and alcohol use or urban development projects considering beauteous sites of Istanbul became unbearable for the conscientious citizens.

Citizens are injured, some of them are killed by the police (The photos being shown here are not the really violent ones on the contrary depicting the poetic side of it). Even though one may not reach Taksim, s/he keeps protesting in her/his own neighbourhood.  This is not only an act against a government’s policies but also against fascism in the world. Media is censored. Facebook and Twitter is about to be. Protestors are communicating via these mediums by giving advices which streets to use or how to deal with the gas. Protestors all learned that Gaviscon or Talcid mixed with water is life saving!

Therefore, PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!  SOLIDARITY!

“Attention! Turkish democracy needs you!

After a series of peaceful demonstrations for preserving a recreational area in Istanbul city center which is planned to demolished for the construction of a shopping mall, Turkish police attacked the protesters violently with tear gas and water cannon, directly targeting their faces and bodies. Dozens of protesters are hospitalized and access to the park is blocked without any legal basis. Turkish media, directly controlled by the government or have business and political ties with it, refuse to cover the incidents. Press agencies also blocked the information flow.

Please share this message for the world to become aware of the police state created by AKP of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, which is often considered to be a model for other Middle Eastern countries. Turkish democracy expects your help. Thank you!”
