Sharon O’Neill
Now that we’re probably all back from our holidays, it is time to load our pictures in the computer and have a look at how great it was! Close to Home is a portrait of a small town on an island off the coast of Kent. The work focuses on the seasonal and permanent inhabitants, depicting their lives and environment as local and national issues alter the delicate balance of their environment and livelihoods over the course of the season and years.
Sharon O’Neill’s photographic practice draws from the sphere of social documentary photography and concentrates primarily on people and places that from the outside seem unexceptional, and by the very nature of their everyday-ness, are overlooked. Through her photography she explores ordinary life, and the external factors that can alter the delicate balance of a place or a community.
